Nitrous Oxide in Denver Highlands
We understand that almost everyone is a little bit afraid of the dentist, and we go to great lengths to ensure that each dental visit, for each of our patients, is as comfortable as possible. Some people have enough fear and anxiety over visiting the dentist that they avoid it altogether. Some people may have had a bad experience at the dentist, or perhaps they find the sights and sounds of a dental office intimidating.
If you are staying away from the dentist because of fear, you may want to consider an option that is available to keep you relaxed during any type of dental procedure: nitrous oxide.
At Highland Smiles, Dr. Jennifer Rohleder offers nitrous oxide (better known as “laughing gas”), which can help tremendously if you have dental anxiety. Nitrous oxide can be used for any type of dental procedure, including dental cleanings. You will remain fully conscious while using the gas. The nitrous kills pain and gives patients a pleasurable feeling.
Nitrous Oxide and Safety
Nitrous oxide is completely safe. One of its benefits is that it is eliminated from the body just about immediately after it is turned off. Its calming effect might even serve to improve communication between you and your dentist during the procedure, meaning your treatment might be more effective. Nitrous is also effective for patients who have a very strong gag reflex.
The Nitrous Oxide Procedure
Breathed in through a mask similar to an oxygen mask, nitrous oxide is a colorless, odorless gas. You will experience a euphoric feeling after breathing it in for just a few minutes. It is this euphoria that gives the gas its nickname “laughing gas.” It is ideal for treating dental anxiety because patients are still conscious but they no longer have any fear or feel any pain.
If you do experience any sensitivity or discomfort during a dental procedure, you can always signal the dentist, hygienist, or dental assistant. We will immediately stop the treatment and make sure that you’re comfortable again before proceeding.
Advantages of Nitrous Oxide
When it comes to making patients comfortable, nitrous oxide has a number of advantages, including:
- It works quickly and relaxation comes very soon after administration begins.
- There are no needles used.
- Patients can drive right after because it leaves the system almost immediately.
- There is no “hangover” effect after use because it is eliminated from the system so fast.
- The level of nitrous oxide being administered can be altered quickly and easily, if needed.
- There are minimal side effects and no allergies associated with nitrous oxide
