Which Beverages Could Hurt Your Smile?

What Beverages are bad for Teeth | Dentist Highlands

Did you know that your favorite daily drink could be detrimental to your smile? Many of the beverages we consume each day actually contribute to cavities, staining, and discoloration of your teeth.

Here are some of the worst culprits.

Coffee and Tea

Your morning cup of coffee can actually cause many dental issues such as dry mouth, staining, and tooth decay. It's especially problematic when you purchase a specialty beverage that could be laden with a lot of sugar. Because coffee and tea are acidic, it's a double-edged sword when they contain sugar, which increases your chances of developing cavities.

To help minimize the effects of coffee and tea, try making your own version of your beverage at home to reduce your sugar intake and limit your consumption to one beverage per day.

Soft Drinks and Power Beverages

Soft drinks, especially dark colas, are one of the worst beverages you can drink. Along with sports or power drinks, you are again looking at a bad combination of high acidity and sugar. Acid works to erode your tooth enamel, and sugar fuels the bacteria that produce more acid in this troublesome combination.

Fruit Juices

While it may seem like a healthy drink, fruit juices also contain a lot of sugar. Some, such as orange juice, are also high in acidity.

When you drink juice, it's a good idea to wait at least 30 minutes before you brush your teeth to allow the pH in your mouth to return to normal levels. You could also use a straw when drinking juices or soft drinks to minimize your contact with the beverage.

Red Wine

Red wine is another beverage that plays a huge role in staining your teeth. While we don't want to tell you not to enjoy red wine every now and then, you can drink water along with it and brush shortly after to help reduce discoloration.
