Your Dental Cleaning—From Beginning to End
There are lots of reasons to visit your Denver dentist, but dental cleanings are one of the most common treatments you’ll receive. It is recommended that you visit the dentist twice each year for examinations and cleanings. This will help ensure you maintain the best oral health possible because it gives your dentist the opportunity to keep an eye out for potential problems.
If you have an appointment on the books with your dentist for a dental cleaning, here is what you can expect from your time in the dental chair—from the beginning of your appointment all the way to the end.
Most dental offices, Highland Smiles included, offer a full oral examination as part of your dental cleaning appointment. When you come into our office, Dr. Kara Arnold or Dr. Jennifer Rohleder will give you a full examination, checking for potential issues. A visual exam will look for such issues as decay and oral cancer. Dr. Arnold and Rohleder will also use dental instruments to check your teeth and gums.
You may also receive an x-ray to search for underlying problems not yet visible to the naked eye. We usually do x-rays on an annual basis.
If any issues were spotted during the examination, these might be given special attention during your dental cleaning.
Your cleaning will be performed by a dental hygienist. Your gum health will be measured using special tools. Your hygienist will spend time scraping tartar buildup from your teeth, after which a detailed cleaning will be done to ensure that all spots of calculus have been removed.
Finally, your hygienist will floss your teeth and rinse them to ensure that all debris has been removed and rinsed away.
Once your teeth have been completely cleaned, your hygienist will polish them. The gritty substance that is used will buff away surface stains. Your teeth will feel smooth—and they may even look whiter. You’ll have another chance to rinse afterward to ensure that all the polishing agent has been removed.
