Extending the Life of Your Dental Implant

Dental Implants | Periodontics | Denver CO

Once you make the decision to replace one or more missing teeth with a dental implant, you probably feel immediate relief. After all, it can be distressing to have gaps in your mouth from missing teeth.

As you probably already know, dental implants are a great option for replacing missing teeth. But they are also quite an investment. Often patients who come to our Denver Highlands dental office want to know how long dental implants are expected to last. They also want to know what they can do to extend the life of their dental implant.

Let’s take a look at what you can do to best protect your investment.

How Dental Implants Work

A dental implant is essentially a screw—usually made of titanium—that is surgically placed into the jawbone. Over a period of a few months, the implant integrates into the jawbone so it is permanent and secure. A restoration is attached to the top of the implant. This crown looks very much like a natural tooth, and it functions very much like a natural tooth.

Keep Dental Implants—And Your Mouth—Clean

Caring for your dental implant is not much different than caring for your natural teeth: Brush and floss as normal. Be sure to visit your dentist twice each year for examinations and cleanings. Your dentist will also examine the dental implants to make sure they are still structurally sound.

Although dental implants won’t develop cavities the way your natural teeth do, it’s important to keep your gums healthy to avoid infection.

Keep Dental Implants Protected

Many of the same habits that can damage your natural teeth will do the same to your dental implant. Avoid teeth grinding or clenching, and don’t chew particularly hard foods such as hard candies and ice.

With proper care, your dental implants can last many years! Give your Denver Highlands dentist a call, and we can help you develop a plan to keep your dental implants strong and functional for years to come.
